Teaching

I’m an instructor at ESPA at Primary Stages, which offers a variety of courses in writing, acting, and directing taught by some of the coolest theatre professionals in the New York area. I also teach at NYU-Playwrights Horizons Theater School and in the spring of '15, I taught some grad playwrights and prose writers at Temple University. I’ve guest taught at other places like Rutgers and Spalding University and spent a few springs teaching the badass MFA and BFA playwrights at Ohio University.

Script Consultation

For the past several years, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching many students—from age 19 to 65—and one of the constant needs for all of us at every level is critical, supportive feedback. But not everyone has the time to take classes or has access to writing groups. If you’re looking for some in-depth one-on-one help with your play or TV script, this is the place!

Send me your play and . . .
  • I’ll read your script, provide detailed written feedback and one half hour phone call / Skype /Google Chat to address additional questions or thoughts you might have based on my feedback
  • Cost – $250.00
  • Second draft reading/follow-up feedback – $175.00

Send me your television spec or pilot and . . .
  • I’ll read your script, provide detailed written feedback and one half hour phone call / Skype /Google Chat to address additional questions or thoughts you might have based on my feedback
  • Cost – $275.00

Let’s DO this!

Nice words from past students:

“One of the best things about taking a class with Kara, is her LACK OF EGO. She is so down to earth and funny! And more importantly, she always treated us like peers.  She valued our writing and gave specific, honest feedback. Also, her extensive knowledge of plays and  playwrights was so incredibly helpful.  I love how she was able to identify similarities in style and tone in each individual person’s piece, and recommend at least 5 playwrights for that writer.  All around – a SUPERB teacher!”
~Ellen Fraher, ESPA student

“Kara’s got a wonderful ability to shake writers out of their comfort zone. I mean, she’s wildly encouraging, smart as a whip and generally fucking awesome. But the most valuable thing she offered me was that sort of ‘devil’s advocate,’ ‘why don’t we try something different,’ thing thatsucceeded in getting me to look at things in ways I never otherwise would.”
~Mark Chrisler, Ohio University graduate (MFA)

“What Kara did for me, personally, was provide a brand-new perspective on how a class should work. It taught me a good work ethic, one that I’ve carried with me and expanded upon ever since.  She was like a fire underneath me.”
~Anthony Donald Kochensparger, Ohio University graduate (BFA)

“Kara is a very generous teacher. She has the rare ability to put her own personal tastes aside and speak to the vision of the writer and she supports their vision and goals. She deals not only with the juicy creativity of writing, but also the craft and the business – all of which are so important.”
